Older adults need a safe living environment.
Unfortunately, as we age or change our medical status, the ability to stay safe at home can steadily go downhill.
When we least expect it, we fall – walking in a room where we usually can walk blindfolded.
Reaching for something on that second shelf used to be easy. Now, we need a step stool – but our balance may not be good. Then, should we try it or take the chance of falling?
Knowing when to ask for help…
Older people don’t want to admit when help is needed. The mentality we’ve lived with our entire lives of ‘we can do it’ is still in place.
Then, we almost fall down the basement stairs – or we have an accident in our home. Our limitations hit us squarely in the face.
Asking for help is not our first choice… we tell ourselves, “I’ll be more careful. I won’t do that anymore.”
But, then something else happens.
